Rodrigo and Julio Rejón emerged victorious in the 500 Km race of Puebla Amozoc, second event of TCR Mexico and opening round of the Endurance Challenge, that took place Sunday on the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed.
At the wheel of their ProRally Mothers-run CUPRA Leon VZ, the Rejón brothers dominated throughout the race. Rodrigo took the lead during the second lap and then consistently built a comfortable margin of 34 seconds after the first hour that grew to more than one minute halfway-through the race, when Julio took over. Despite the traffic, Julio went on to take the chequered flag with a one-lap advantage after 4 hours and 42 minutes in which the CUPRA had completed 149 laps.
Behind the leaders, there was a thrilling fight for the other podium positions. The RE Motorsport Audi RS 3 LMS that Gerardo Nieto had placed on pole position was set to finish second after Pablo Pérez de Lara and Nieto had completed two brilliant stints, but during the final laps the third driver Horian Chirigut pitted with a puncture and dropped down the order.
This promoted two other Leon cars onto the podium; Michel Jourdain who was sharing the Peralta Racing car with Juan Carlos Peralta and Luis Díaz recovered after an early puncture and finished second, 30 seconds ahead of the Centur Silen Racing car driven by Luis Cervantes, Pablo Cervantes and Juan Pablo Sierra.
The TCR México series will resume with a sprint-format event together with the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on May 1/3.
