The ProRally Mothers team took a third consecutive victory in the Mexican Endurance Challenge. After having won the two previous events in a CUPRA Leon Competición, Gerardo Rejón, Gerardo Rejón jr., Rodrigo Rejón and Julio Rejón had upgraded it to VZ specifications for the 12-hour race at Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
No fewer than 13 TCR cars took part in the event, dominating the qualifying and filling the first seven positions overall in the race that was plagued by pouring rain during the night stages.
The RE Motorsport Audi RS 3 LMS driven by Gerardo Nieto, Pablo Pérez de Lara and Ricardo Pérez de Lara started from the pole position and led for the first ten hours until it was handed and five-minute penalty for repeated track infringements. This promoted the Z Motors CUPRA Leon Competicion of Santos Zanella, Santos Zanella jr. and Franco Zanella to the first position, but during the last two hours the ProRally Mothers car moved into the lead and built a gap.
A safety car intervention with 40 minutes left on the clock gave the Z Motors team the chance to threaten the leaders, but during the last stint Julio Rejón successfully defended the position. The podium was completed by the Orea Ross Racing Hyundai Elantra N of Andrés Orea and Jerónimo Guzmán.
TCR Mexico will resume on July 12/13 with a sprint-race event at the same circuit.
