Proczyk survives chaos to win TCR Germany’s Race 2

16 August 2020

2018 TCR Germany champion Harald Proczyk survived a chaotic Race 2 at the Nürburgring to claim his maiden win of the season. Fourth after the start, the Austrian driver benefitted from the problems of the competitors in front of him and crossed the finishing line with a four-second margin over yesterday’s winner Norbert Michelisz. Dominik Fugel completed the podium in third position and retained the leadership in the standings, four points clear of Proczyk.
The field was reduced to 13 cars only as both the Honda Civics of Mike and Michelle Halder have been withdrawn as a protest against Mike’s exclusion from Saturday’s Race 1.
Nico Gruber and Antti Buri started from the front row of the reversed grid, while Jessica Bäckman who should have sat on P2, was demoted to P7 by a penalty for causing the incident at the start of Race 1.
Buri took the lead from Gruber and Andreas Bäckman who was soon passed by Proczyk. The young Swede tried to defend P4 from Michelisz, but on lap 7, the WTCR champion managed to go through. Soon afterwards, Bäckman was given a drive-through for jump-start and dropped at the back of the field.
In lap 9, Gruber damaged the front suspension over the kerbs and retired, which helped Proczyk to move into P2 and Michelisz into P3. Two laps later, another drive-through for jump-start was imposed to the leader Buri, meaning that Proczyk and Michelisz inherited first and second place, which is the way they finished the race with Dominik Fugel a distant third. Jessica Bäckman provided the last thrill as she overtook René Kircher for P6 on the penultimate lap.
The third race meeting of TCR Germany will take place at Hockenheim, 18/20 September.
