The Bryan Herta Autosport’s pair of Michael Lewis and Mark Wilkins finished first and second in the Pirelli World Challenge TCR’s Race 2 at Lime Rock Park.
Lewis – who sat on pole position – and Wilkins took command of the race at the start in their Hyundai i30 N cars; Race 1 winner and championship leader Ryan Eversley followed in third position in his Honda Civic run by RealTime Racing.
The safety car was deployed at the end of the opening lap, as a TCA class car had stalled on the grid. The race resumed on lap four and while the two Hyundai cars were able to create a gap, Eversley was given a drive-through for jump-start.
On lap 16, series newcomer David Ostella crashed his Audi RS 3 LMS, which prompted the safety car back in action. When the race resumed, the recovering Eversley moved up to seventh and then passed Nate Vincent’s Volkswagen Golf GTI for sixth. His charge was stopped by the safety car’s third intervention that lasted until the penultimate lap.
Eversley chased Mason Filippi’s Volkswagen during the last lap and won the sprint for the fifth position by inches that became fourth after the race, following a penalty inflicted to Jérimy Daniel.
Lewis scored his second win of the season, closely followed by his teammate Wilkins, while Puerto Rican Bryan Ortiz finished third on his maiden appearance in the championship with the Copeland Motorsports Volkswagen Golf.
The fifth place helped Eversley to retain the lead in the standings with 136 points, but Wilkins and Lewis have closed the gaps to seven and 17 points respectively.
The series will visit Portland International Raceway on July 13/14.
