Gary Kwok was the man to beat in the second event of the Sports Car Championship Canada at Calabogie Motorsport Park. The M&S Racing driver won both races – the first victories for the new Honda Civic FL5 in the series - and moved up on top of the standings, two points ahead of Richard Boake who had started the season with a double victory at Bowmanville.
Megan Tomlinson put on a show in front of her home crowd and claimed her maiden podium results: third in race 1 and second in race 2.
Race 1 – Anthony Martella had set the pole position in soaking wet conditions, nearly two seconds faster than Kwok, with Megan Tomlinson third fastest ahead of her father Ron. Under pouring rain, Martella led the field at the start, but Kwok overtook him in lap 2, while Martella had to defend the second place from Megan Tomlinson. The leaders remained together for the first half of the race, then Kwok began to pull away and managed to increase his leading margin up to 5.2 seconds. During the final laps Kwok eased down, which enabled Martella to close the gap to two seconds under the chequered flag. Behind them, Megan Tomlinson, shoulders covered by her father, claimed her first podium result.
Race 2 – Kwok and Martella once again fought for the victory, with Kwok leading the first quarter of the race. Martella then overtook him and led until the final lap when Kwok closed the gap and went for a move on the outside. Their cars clashed, with Kwok sliding through the grass, avoiding the barriers and eventually making it to the line in second position. However, after post-race review, Martella was excluded for causing the incident and Kwok was promoted to P1, with Megan Tomlinson and Boake advancing to second and third.
The series will resume at on 20/22 July in the frame of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto Grand Prix.
