Julio and Rodrigo Rejón share wins in TCR Mexico inaugural event

07 April 2024

The inaugural event of TCR Mexico took place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez where four TCR cars raced together with the local Super Turismos within the frame of the Copa NotiAuto. Julio and Rodrigo Rejón emerged as the category’s first ever winners, sharing race victories in the ProRally CUPRA Leon Competición.

In Qualifying, Julio Rejón won the pole position ahead of the Giada Racing Honda Civic cars driven by Horia Chirigut and Hugo Bonilla.

Chirigut had the best reflex at the rolling start for Race 1 and led, but Julio Rejón began chasing him and muscled his way into the P1 in lap 2. Rejón led for the whole distance ahead of Chirigut who was never able to close the gap enough for attempting an attack. During the last part of the race, Chirigut lost contact, finishing three seconds behind the winner. Bonilla completed the podium, while Mario Domínguez in the Escuderia Gatopardo Volkswagen Golf GTI who was placed fourth during the first lap, pitted with an engine problem and rejoined until eventually blew the engine and retired.

Sergio Legorreta’s Golf GTI and Bonilla’s Honda shared the front row of the grid for Race 2, with Chirigut and Rodrigo Rejón behind them, but Legorreta returned to the pits after the warm-up lap. Just like in the first race, Chirigut made the best start and led from Rejón, while Bonilla lost contact. The fight for the lead heated up in lap 5, when Rejón passed Chirigut who reacted and retook the lead. In lap 7, Rejón moved back into P1 and two laps later Chirigut retired with a technical issue. Rejón continued to dominate the race lapped Bonilla just before the end.

The series will resume at Querétaro on June 1st.
