Volcano Motorsport’s Isidro Callejas nearly made a clean sweep in TCR Spain’s second event at Jerez de la Frontera. Callejas drove his CUPRA Leon Competición in first position under the chequered flag in all the three races but was stripped of his win in Race 2 by a penalty for track limit infringements. This handed the victory to Alejandro Geppert, the first one for him and the Teo Martín Motorsport-run Hyundai Elantra N.
In the standings, Callejas has extended his lead to 37 points over Geppert.
After setting pole position, Callejas claimed a lights-to-flag win in Saturday’s Race 1, while Geppert ran in second position, finishing 5.8 seconds behind the winner. The focus shifted on the fight for P3 between Gustavo Moura and Miguel Villacieros, with the latter who eventually managed to beat his rival to complete the podium.
At the start of Race 2, pole sitter Villacieros and Moura made contact while entering into T1 and the latter spun. Villacieros kept Callejas and Geppert at bay until lap 7, when he lost the lead to Callejas. One lap later, Geppert passed his teammate for P2. Eventually, Callejas was given a 5-second penalty for track limits and so dropped to third behind Geppert and Villacieros.
Geppert was on pole for Race 3, but Callejas had a better reflex and led into T1 from Geppert and Moura. Callejas pulled away and built a comfortable margin, winning by 6.2 seconds over Geppert, while this time it was Moura who beat Villacieros after a close fight for third.
The series will resume on September 3/4 at MotorLand Aragón.
