the Year award for the second consecutive year, we take a quick look at where the top Audi drivers are placed in the TCR World Ranking. It’s probably no surprise to see the top three drivers all are from the Comtoyou Racing stable, which has become the de facto Audi customer racing squad in touring car competition.
Franco Girolami, the TCR Europe champion, is the best ranked of the contingent in fifth place, though the Argentine led the standings for much of the last quarter, only dropping back after a mixed pair of race meetings at the WTCR season enders in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Frédéric Vervisch sits tenth in the ranking, with the Belgian still scoring well thanks to his sterling runner-up season in the 2021 WTCR, while making an appearance at the 2022 TCR Europe season finale in Spain keeps his score very much active. Vervisch remarked at the event he very much hopes to be back in touring car racing in 2023 with Audi.
TCR’s busiest driver Tom Coronel is also high in the table. The Dutchman had a brilliant season in TCR Europe, finishing second despite missing a race, as well as emerging victorious in the FIA Motorsport Games at Le Castellet. The results of these series alone would see the social media icon fourth in the ranking, but a mixed campaign in WTCR has brought his score down slightly and sees him ranked 21st, but he’s still well within the all-important top 45, which would be the cut-off for the TCR World Ranking Final come September 2023.
Other Audi drivers in the top 45 include third in this year’s WTCR driver Nathanaël Berthon in 31st, with his team-mate Gilles Magnus 35th. The first driver from outside of the Comtoyou Racing powerhouse is TCR Scandinavia championship challenger Tobias Brink, with a respectable 39th, while TCR Australia front-runner Jay Hanson sits just outside the top 45 in 50th position.
